How to find the best quality Emu Oil – A consumer’s guide.

As a consumer, you might be scratching your head when searching for Emu Oil online.  Everyone, it seems, has their own marketing terms, such as “Fully-Refined”, “Molecularly Distilled”, “Triple Refined”, etc.  Prices can vary widely and they all claim to be the best! While these terms can be confusing, there is a simple way to find out which Emu Oil is right for you.

I’m assuming that you are already hooked on Emu Oil, or are at least ready to try it, so I’m not going to spend much time here explaining the benefits of this amazing oil.  You can learn all about it by visiting our page on Emu Oil.  Instead I’m going to give you 3 clear-cut steps to help ensure you are getting a safe high quality emu oil. help you through the jungle of marketing terms that make up the Emu Oil marketplace.

1. Always ask for a batch specific Certificate of Analysis.
The easiest and safest way to ensure that the Emu Oil you are thinking about purchasing is of a high quality is to ask for a Certificate of Analysis (COA).  The COA is produced by an AOCS (American Oil Chemist Society) certified chemist after an independent laboratory has scientifically analyzed a sample from a specific batch of emu oil.  This document will show in detail the various components found it that batch.  If the oil is said to be Certified Fully Refined the COA will verify this.  The COA results will show that the oil meets the AEA (American Emu Association) “Fully Refined” standards as defined in the Emu Oil Trade Rules. (By the way, the terms “Molecularly Distilled” or “Triple Refined” are not referred to in these trade rules. These trade rules are the only industry recognized standards that have been set.)  Make sure the COA is batch specific and not just a “typical”, i.e. “best we’ve ever had”, COA report.  Most legitimate suppliers will provide a batch specific COA at no charge to you even before you make a purchase.  Not all companies will have these tests done on their Emu Oil (as they can be expensive) so it doesn’t mean that a lack of a COA means bad oil.  It does, however, mean that you have to take the seller’s word on the quality of the item you are buying, and anyone who has ever been to a car dealership knows how risky this can be.

2. Check out the company’s reputation.
Another way of ensuring the quality of the oil is to check up on the company.  As we all know, anyone can put up a web site and advertise online.  These days more than ever you must know whom you are buying from.   Find out things like how long they have been in business, can their business information be verified, are they listed with the BBB (Better Business Bureau) or other business monitoring services, do they belong to any trade organizations, have others complained about them, or if they have any other verifiable business credentials.  If the company is not a member of the BBB, has unresolved complaints or no easily verifiable credentials then you may want to shop elsewhere.  The bottom line here is that a company that has a good reputation wants to keep it.  They are much more likely to provide high quality products and good customer service.

3. Find out what type of guarantee is offered.
Usually the quality of the product is directly related to the quality of the guarantee.  Simply put, a company that sells a poor quality product can’t afford to offer a good guarantee.  A couple of things to watch out for are short return periods (such as 10-15 days) and re-stocking fees (sometimes up to 15%).  Also beware of wording such as “for exchange only”, “return authorization required”, or “un-opened containers only”.  A company’s guarantee should be easy to locate on their web site and clearly stated.  Their return period should give you enough time to receive the product, try it, and return if you are dissatisfied.

By following these 3 easy steps you will learn what quality of emu oil any given supplier has to offer, if the supplier can be trusted, and whether they stand behind their product.  This information will make you a better consumer and help you to make intelligent purchasing decisions.  Keep in mind that whether you are looking for emu oil or anything else these strategies may improve your overall shopping experience.
